1. Cut 10 pieces of 3/4" flat reed 13" long and mark center with small pencil mark on wrong side of reed. 2. Cut 4 pieces of 3/4" flat reed 13" long. 3. Cut 1 piece of 3/4" flat reed 40" long. 4. Soak all the above in water. 5. Lay 5 pieces of the 13" long reed on a flat surface (See Figure 1).
6. Weave other 5 pieces over and under to make base. Base should measure 8" in diameter, with extensions of 2 1/2". 7. The extension beyond the base should be equal on all four sides ( 2 1/2").
8. Fit base inside square hoop and clip each weaver to frame with clothes pins. The wrong side of the reed should be turned to the back. The tip of each piece of reed should NOT extend above the hoop.
9. Add inserts - four 13" pieces of reed; and cut to fit according to Figure 2.
10. Glue each weaver to the hoop.
11. Glue a 40" piece of reed around the inside of the hoop, covering the glued weavers. To make a larger tobacco basket, simply use larger square hoops, wider reed and longer lengths.
