From 1/2" FF cut 5 spokes each 31" long. Soak briefly along with a strand of 1/4" FF.
Put the handle down horizontally in front of you. Lay a spoke vertically under the handle starting on the far left side of the handle. The next spoke is over the handle, etc. (Spokeweights come in handy).
Base Weaving: Center an 18" strand of 1/4" FF and weave half of the weaver to the right, the other half to the left. Then come up over the end spoke to weave the 2nd row. Both weavers will overlap in the middle of the 2nd row - cut if necessary (see photo below)
Snug these 2 rows up to the handle. Do the same on the other side. The base will measure 6" long x approximately 2" deep which includes the handle and 4 rows of 1/4" FF.
Upset the spokes and weave the following rows start and stop: 1 row 1/2" FF (woven outside the center spoke). 1 row 1/4" FF green 1 row 1/4" FF red 17 rows 1/2" FF 1 row 1/4" FF red 1 row 1/4" FF green 1 row 1/2" FF For the rim row, cut a strand of 1/2" FF down to approximately 3/8" - it does not have to be exact as the rims will cover it. Cut and tuck the spokes. Rim with 1/2" FF inside and outside, seagrass between rims, and lash with 1/4" FF.
I sprayed my basket and sled with Oak Weaver's Stain. Let it dry completely before tying on the sled, and gluing on the holly.
Attaching The Sled: double over the 12" cord and tie one end to the bar of the sled. Bring the cord up behind a spoke and back down and tie it onto the other side of the bar. Refer to photo. I used a hot glue gun to glue my holly on the basket and sled.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
