If you plan to stain your base and handle, do so before weaving the basket.
Cut 40 Spokes from 5/8" FF each 6" long. Soak briefly. With smooth side down, insert a spoke at each handle end, and then 19 spokes in between. I suggest you glue in all spokes. Dry fit each spoke, then remove one at a time and glue it in. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spoke, run sand paper around the slot several times and/or sand down the end of each spoke.
Twine with #2R two times around the base, keeping the spokes flat. Upset the spokes and weave 8 rows start and stop with 3/16" FO. Leave about 1/2" clearance between the handle and the weavers to allow the handle to slide up and down.
After weaving the 8 rows, weave 3 rows of dyed 1/4" FF, 1 row 3/16" FO and a rim row of 3/8" FF. Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims and lash with 3/16" FO.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
