If you plan to stain your base and handle, do so before weaving the basket.
Cut 36 spokes from 1/2" FF each 6" long. Insert the spokes smooth side down into the base with handle side up. You will have 5 spokes on each short end, 2 in each corner, and 9 on each long side. Refer to diagram below:
I suggest you glue in all your spokes. Dry fit each spoke, then remove one at a time and glue it in. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spoke, run sand paper around the slot several times and/or sound down the end of each spoke.
Weave the first two rows with 3/16" FO as close to the base as possible. Gently upset the spokes and weave 7 more rows with 3/16" FO, keeping the spokes up straight. Leave about 1/2" clearance between the handle and the weavers to allow the handle to slide up and down.
After weaving a total of 9 rows, weave in 3 rows of dyed 1/4" FF, 1 row 3/16" FO and a rim row of 7mm FF. Pack well, cut and tuck in the usual manner. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between the rims, and lash with 3/16" FO.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
