From 1/2" FF cut 5 spokes 24" long and 7 spokes 21" long. Also, from 7mm FF cut 4 filler spokes 14" long. Mark the center of several spokes and filler spokes. Layout 5 spokes (24") horizontally, alternating with the 4 filler spokes. Line up the center marks. Weave in 1 center spoke (21") vertically, starting over the center horizontal spoke, and weaving under the filler spokes. Weave in 3 more spokes on each side of the center spoke. Adjust base to 7"L x 4"W. Fold the filler spokes to the inside of the base and tuck under the 3rd spoke of base weaving. Twine one time around the base with #2R. Upset the spokes. Weave 18 rows start and stop using 7mm FF. The width of the basket at the top should be approximately 6" to accommodate the handles. Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes, rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. I sprayed my basket and handles with Maple Weaver's Stain before attaching the handles to the basket. Attaching The Handles: Locate the center spoke on the long side of the basket. Count 1 spoke over from this center spoke and put a pencil mark on the rim. This will be a "handle spoke". Repeat on the other side of this center spoke. Do the same on the opposite side of the basket. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handles with #4 screw, bead, washer & nut. Profile of handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket) - - - screw, bead, handle, washer, rim, and nut. Cut off screw if it is too long, and file the end if needed. Tie on the Cone Flower tie-on (Cone Flower Tie On No Longer Available) with violet ribbon. |
