Cut 63 spokes from 7mm FO each 16" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center of the base (6") and insert a spoke at this mark, and one on the oppisite side of the base. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit). Then insert 30 spokes on one side of the center spoke and 31 spokes on the other side. Having an odd number of spokes allows for continuous twill weave.
Twine with #2 R 2 times around, keeping the spokes flat. End off the round reed. Gently upset the spokes. Taper the end of a long piece of 3/16" FO Smoked. Twill weave over 2, under 2 for approximately 60 rows or when the basket is about 11 1/2" high. Pack as you go. Measure often - your handle is 14" wide. Taper the weaver to end the weaving. Pack again. Twine 2 times around with #2 R. Cut and tuck spokes (I tucked all my spokes). Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between, and lash with 3/16" FO Natural.
Attaching the Handle: The handle will be attached on the rounded ends of the basket. Locate a spoke this is somewhat in the center of the base and put a pencil mark on the rim. Do the same on the oppisite end. Because of the odd number of spokes, you will have to make a minor adjustment in the placement of the handle on the opposite end. You want it centered within the round ends of the base. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handle with the #6 screw, bead, washer and nut. Profile of handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket) - - - screw, bead, handle, washer, rim and nut. Cut off screw if it is too long and file the end if needed.
Arrangement in basket consists of two sets of lighted willow branches and grasses.
Lighted Willow Branches (battery operated with timer) and all materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works. |
