Cut 38 spokes from 5/8" FF each 9" long and 6 spokes each 5" long. These shorter pieces will be your "handle opening spokes". If you plan to stain your base, do so first. I used Red Mahogany which is available at hardware stores. Put a light pencil mark in the center fo your base ( 5" ). If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and /or sand down the end of each spoke (you want a tight fit).
Center 3 of your short "handle opening spokes" on the end of the base. The overall measurement of these 3 spokes will be 2 1/2", (outside to outside). Repeat on the other end with remaining 3 short "handle opening spokes". It is important that your "handle opening spokes" are centered on the ends of the base. Insert a spoke in the center of the base (5" mark). Repeat on the other side. Now insert the remaining spokes - 9 on each side of the center spoke.
Weave 1 row of 11/64" FO starting on TOP of the center spoke. Keep the spokes FLAT and weave in the 2nd row. Then, gently upset the spokes and weave 3 more rows of 11/64" FO (total of 5 rows). Weave 1 row 1/4" FF dyed walnut, 1 row 11/64" FO, and 2 rows 3/8" FF.
You are now at your "handle opening", so PACK WELL. Cut off flush the middle "handle opening spoke", and tuck the spoke on each side of this. Repeat on opposite side. DO NOT CUT THE REMAINING SPOKES.
You will now weave from one handle opening to the other opening. Start the 1st row of 3/8" FF by laying it inside the 5/8" FF spoke. Weave around to the opposite handle opening, ending as you began. 2nd row of 3/8" FF weaving - leave a 3 - 4" tail and bend it back inside the basket, tucking it behind the 3rd spoke. Weave around to the opposite handle opening, ending as you began. Repeat same procedure for 1 row of 1/4" FF dyed walnut, and 1 row 3/8" FF.
|
The handles will now be threaded onto a row of 3/8" FF (rim row). At this point you should have a total of 14 rows of weaving. Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Thread the 5/8" FO outside rim, 5/8" FF inside rim, and #6R through the handles. Lash with 11/64" FO. Start the lashing just past the handle and lash to opposite handle, and reverse direction. Repeat on the other side of the basket with another strand of 11/64" FO.
