Cut 2 "handle spokes" from 5/8" FF each 20" long. Cut 22 spokes from 1/2" FF each 9 1/2" long. Soak briefly. Insert the 2 long " handle spokes" on each end of the base, and the 22 spokes from the 1/2" FF evenly spaced between. I found it helpful to glue in the spokes. Twine twice around the base with #2R, keeping the spokes flat. DO NOT CUT THE ROUND REED.
Gently upset the spokes and continue to twine 2 more times around. End off your round reed. Start and stop the following rows: 1 row 1/4" FF red, and 1 row 1/4" FF green, 1 row 1/4" FF red, 11 rows 7mm FF, 1 row 1/4" FF red, 1 row 1/4" FF green, 1 row 1/4" FF red, and 1 row 7mm FF(rim row). Pack well. Cut and tuck the 1/2" FF spokes in the usual manner, BUT DO NOT CUT THE 5/8" FF HANDLE SPOKES.
Handle Assembly: bring both "handle spokes" up through the stoneware handle opening, overlapping them. Adjust the height to your liking (mine measured approximately 15" end to end). Cut a piece of 5/8" FO the length of your handle PLUS 8". I cut mine 23" which allowed me to insert 4" into the basket on each end. Soak this piece well so it will be very flexible. Thin down 4" on each end of this 5/8" FO "handle filler" so that it won't distort the shape of the basket. Insert the 5/8" FO into one end of the basket, come up on the top of the "handle spokes", through the handle opening, and down to the other side and insert the end into the basket. Clip these pieces together. Thread a flexible long, wet strand of 11/64" FO through the opening of the handle, centering it. Half of this will wrap down one side of the handle, the other half will wrap the other side. Cut a 7" piece of 1/4" FF red overlay, slide it through the handle opening, centering this. Wrap UNDER the red for about 1 1/2", then wrap over it a few times to anchor it down. After handle wrapping is complete, I used a drop of glue to secure the end of the 11/64" FO to the inside of the basket. Rim with 1/2" FO inside and out, seagrass between rims, and double lash with 11/64" FO. Spray with Clear Weaver's Stain, and attach tie on.
Stoneware handles are available in 6 designs: Apple, Blueberry, Cattails, Holly, Sunflower, and Wheat
