If desired, paint the handle. I painted mine black to compliment my choice of ebony spokes. Sand the handle well before painting. Two coats of paint were required with sanding between coats.
Cut 28 spokes from the 3/8" FF (dyed) each 9" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center of the base (4") and insert a spoke at this mark and one on the opposite side. These are your "handle spokes". If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit). Then insert the remaining spokes - 13 on each side of the center spokes. To avoid "bleeding" of the dyed spokes, just dampen them slightly.
Twine with #2R 3 times around keeping the spokes flat. DO NOT CUT THE ROUND REED. Gently upset the spokes and continue to twine 3 more times. End off the #2R. Measure off two 36ft. lengths of 4mm natural double twisted paper cord. DO NOT WET THE PAPER CORD. Chase weave for 26 - 28 rows, packing often. If you need to add onto the paper cord, just butt the ends inside the basket. Twine with #2R 2 times around the top. Again, pack well.
Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO outside, 1/2" FF inside, 4mm natural double twisted paper cord for the rim filler, and lash with 11/64" FO.
Attaching the handle: Locate your center "handle spokes" and put a pencil mark on the rim. Do the same on the opposite side. Dampen the rim area before drilling holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handle with #6 screw, bead, washer & nut. Profile of handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket)- - - screw, bead, handle, washer, rim & nut. Cut off the screw if it is too long and file the end if needed.
