Top Basket Size: 6"L x 5"D x 3 1/2"T Basket Designed and Pattern Written by Suzanne Moore
A complete Kit is also available Kit
Cut 20 spokes each 6" long from 1/2" FF. Soak briefly. With smooth side down, insert 3 spokes on each short end of the base, 5 spokes on each long side, and 1 spoke in each corner. Because the spokes will be bent up immediately, I glued in all my spokes. Dry fit each spoke, then remove one at a time and glue it in. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit).
Twine 1 time around the base with #1 R. Dampen the spokes. Upset spokes sharply. The first row of 7mm FF MUST be woven inside the center spoke, followed by 3 more rows of start and stop. The bead (Love) will be woven on the 5th row. Cut a 2ft piece of 7mm FF and thread the first bead and center it within this strand. Weave one end of the weaver to the right and the other end to the left and overlap both ends in the back. NOTE: the first bead is woven over the 2nd spoke in from the right corner. Repeat this same process for the next 2 beads (Laugh & Live) but you will be stepping up a spoke (refer to photo).
Weave 4 more rows of 7mm FF. Pack well before cutting and tucking the spokes. Insert the handle, and rim with 3/8" FO, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO.
I sprayed my basket with Maple Weaver's Stain, then immediately wiped off the pewter beads with a paper towel.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works. |
