This 2 base system adds greater stability to the Lazy Susan base. If you plan to stain just your bases, do so before weaving. In order to avoid spraying directly into the mechanism, I used a cloth to apply the stain to the bases. Or you can cut strips of cloth and wedge them between the 2 bases, then spray. Remove cloth after spraying.
Cut 34 spokes from 5/8" FF each 6" long. Soak briefly. With the smooth side down, insert all spokes evenly around the base. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit). I glued in all my spokes. Dry fit all spokes then remove one at a time and glue it in.
Dampen the spokes well and weave 3 rows of 11/64" FO keeping the spokes out straight. Then gently upset the dampened spokes and weave spokes and weave 3 more rows of 11/64" FO (total of 6 rows). Weave start and stop the following rows: 1 row 1/4" FF dyed 1 row 7mm FF 1 row 1/4" FF dyed 2 rows 7mm FF
Check your diameter often! It must be a minimum of 13" in order for the tray to fit. Remember --- the inner rim will take up space. Pack well before cutting and tucking the spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between the rims and single lash with 7mm FF.
You can spray your completed basket by wedging strips of cloth between the 2 bases.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
