John's Basket
I made this basket for a friend who was ill, but filled his with flowers. This quick and easy basket is suitable for any season, holiday, or occasion just by changing the arrangement.

From 5/8" FF cut 7 spokes each 20" long and 2 spokes each 24" long. From 7MM FF cut 2 filler spokes each 17" long. Soak briefly along with a strand of #2R.
Put the handle down horizontally in front of you. Lay the 7 spokes vertically across the handle, starting on the top of the handle, then under the handle, etc. (Spokeweights come in handy).
Weave in a filler spoke horizontally just above the handle, snug it up close to the handle. Now weave in one of the 24" spokes just above the filler spoke. Repeat this on the other side of the handle. Looking from top to bottom, you will have a 5/8" FF spoke, filler spoke, handle, filler spoke, and a 5/8" FF spoke. Adjust the base to 8" long x 2 3/4" wide. Fold the filler spokes to the underneath side of the base and tuck under the 3rd spoke of base weaving. Trim off any excess. Twine one time around the base and handle with #2R.
Upset the spokes and weave start and stop the following rows:
3 rows 7MM FF
1 row 1/4" FF Smoked
1 row 7MM FF
1 row 1/4" FF Smoked
1 row 7MM FF
1 row 1/4" FF Smoked
Repeat this weaving pattern on more time. End with two rows 7MM FF, for a total of 18 rows of weaving.
Pack well. Cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 5/8" FF, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO.
I sprayed my basket with Clear Weaver's Stain before adding my fall arrangement.
