Cut 32 spokes from 3/8" FF each 8" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center of the base (4 1/2"). If the groove in the base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit).
Dampen all spokes. Insert a center spoke on each side of the base, then evenly space the remaining 30 spokes (glue in if desired). Weave 1 row 3/16" FO startingOVER the center spoke, keeping the spokes FLAT. Gently upset the spokes and weave 19 more rows (total of 20 rows) of 3/16" FO start and stop.
Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 3/8" FO, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. I sprayed my basket and handles with Oak Weaver's Stain before attaching the handle to the basket.
Attaching the handles: Locate the center spoke on the long side of the basket. Count 2 spokes over from this center spoke and put a pencil mark on the rim. This will be a "handle spoke". Repeat on the other side of the center spoke(there will be 3 spokes in between the "handle spokes"). Do the same on the opposite side of the basket. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 3/8" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handles with #4 screws, bead, washer & nut. Profile of handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket)---screw, bead, handle, washer, rim & nut. Cut off the screw if it is too long and file the end if needed.
FINISHING YOUR BASKET: There are two ways to attach buttons that have a shank on the back. You can use twist ties to secure them to the basket, or cut off the shank with flush cutters (always wear safety glasses) and glue to the basket using a hot glue gun. The buttons on this basket were glued on. If desired, insert 1/4" FF ebony dyed reed under the truck to resemble a road. All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
