Cut 32 spokes from 1/2" FF each 12" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center(5") of the base. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit). Insert a center spoke on each side of the base, then evenly space the remaining spokes (glue in if desired). Weave 1 row of 11/64" FO starting under the center spoke, keeping the spokes FLAT. Weave the 2nd row then gently upset the spokes and weave 4 more rows of 11/64" FO (for a total of 6 rows).
Weave start and stop the following rows:
1 row 1/4" FF black
1 row 1/4" FF smoked
1 row 11/64" FO
1 row 1/4" FF smoked
1 row 11/64" FO
1 row 1/4" FF smoked
1 row 1/4" FF black
3 rows 11/64" FO
Repeat this pattern 2 more times ending with 3 rows 11/64" FO and 1 row 7mm FF (rim row).
Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between the rims, and lash with 11/64" FO.
I sprayed my basket and handles with Clear Weaver's Stain before attaching the handles to the basket.
Attaching the handles: Locate the center spoke on the long side of the basket. Count 2 spokes over from this center spoke and put a pencil mark on the rim. This will be a "handle spoke". Repeat on the other side of the center spoke (there will be 3 spokes in between the "handle spokes"). Do the same on the opposite side of the basket. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handles with #6 screws, bead, washer & nut. Profile of the handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket) - - - screw, bead, handle, washer, rim & nut. Cut off the screw if it is too long, and file the end if needed.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works. |
