From 1/4" FF dyed green, cut 5 spokes each 3" long, and 5 spokes from 1/4" dyed red 3" long. Dampen the spokes slightly and space them evenly around the base. I found it very helpful to glue in the spokes. Dry fit all spokes, then remove one at a time and glue it in.
From #0R, cut 3ft. for twining around the base. Set aside 7ft. of #0R for twining at the top. Twine 1 time around the base with the 3 ft. of #0R. Upset the spokes and weave straight up 9 rows of 11/64"FO. Pack well before twining 3 times around the top with #0R.
Locate 2 spokes that are opposite from one another. These are your "handle spokes". Cut these 2 spokes off flush. Create a "picket fence" with the remaining spokes.
This is a different concept - there is no tucking of spokes and no rims to lash.
Attaching the "MQ" Christmas Favor Handle: Measure 1" up from the bottom of the handle and bend the wire to the inside to create an "L". Repeat on the opposite side. Using a small drill bit (we used 3/32") drill through a spoke and/or weaver just below the twining. Insert the wire into the hole from the outside of the basket to the inside. Do the same on the other side. Bend the wire up over the twining and back down to the outside of the basket. Wear safety glasses to cut off the excess wire. If necessary, adjust the shape of the handle.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
