Cut 24 spokes from 3/8" FF, each 10" long and 3 spokes each 4" long. Put aside these 4" spokes for later use (they will NOT be inserted into the base). Soak the spokes briefly. Put a light pencil mark in the center of the wood base. This center mark will indicate the placement of a "sleeve spoke". Insert a 3/8" "sleeve spoke" and 1 spoke on each side of this center spoke. These 3 spokes must be close together with just enough room for weavers. The overall measurement of these 3 spokes will be 1 3/8"(outside to outside). Slip the sleeve onto these 3 spokes and adjust the spacing if the sleeve doesn't fit. Remove the sleeve. Insert remaining spokes evenly around the base. I found it very helpful to glue in the spokes. Weave 2 rows 11/64" FF start and stop, keeping the spokes FLAT. Then gently upset the spokes and weave 2 more rows with 11/64" FF(a total of 4 rows). Next, weave 3 rows of 7mm FF, 1 row 1/4" FF green, 1 row 1/4" FF brown, and 1 row 7mm FF. Now insert the three 4" spokes(the ones you had set aside)behind (inside)the original 3 "sleeve spokes". You will now have 3 double spokes. Continue start and stop weaving with 7mm FF, but weaving ONLY THE 3 INNER SPOKES. The 3 original glued in "sleeve spokes" will NOT be incorporated into the weaving until you get above the sleeve. Slip the sleeve on the front(outside) original 3 glued in spokes, and continue weaving. Remember, you will be weaving the 3 inner spokes only. After approximately 8 rows of 7mm FF you should be at the top of the sleeve. Pack well especially between the "sleeve spokes". At this point, I cut off my 3 short inside spokes, cutting them flush with the top of the sleeve. DO NOT CUT THE ORIGINAL GLUED IN SPOKES. Weave 2 more rows 7mm FF, 1 Row 1/4" FF brown, 1 row 1/4" FF green, and 3 rows 7mm FF. Again, pack well, and make sure your sleeve is pushed down on the spokes. Cut and tuck your spokes, rim with 1/2" FF(inner) and 1/2" FO(outer), seagrass between rims, and lash with 11/64" FF. |
