Top Basket Size: 6 1/2"L x 3"D x 3"T (display items not included)
When we bought our warehouse, our dear friends Bob & May Etchason in Indiana made us a salt & pepper basket for our lunchroom. It is still in use today. May passed away in 2011, but I still keep in touch with Bob and he gave me permission to write a pattern for the basket. This is a handy basket for backyard picnics or barbecues. Materials |

From 3/8" FF cut (7) spokes 12" long, (3) spokes 16" long and (2) filler spokes 10" long. Mark the center of several spokes and filler spokes. Layout the 3 spokes (16") horizontally, alternating with the 2 filler spokes. Line up the center marks. Weave in 3 more spokes on each side of this center spoke. adjust base to 5 1/2"L x 2"W.
Fold the filler spokes to the inside of the base, and tuck under the 2nd spoke of base weaving. (You are creating "chicken feet" but NOT cutting the filler spokes in half lengthwise). Refer to photo. Trim off any excess. Repeat on the other end. Twine one time around the base with #2 R. Upset the spokes.
Weave the following start and stop rows (don't let corner spokes slant):
2 rows 3/8" FF, 1 row 1/4" FF - dyed, 1 row 1/2" FF, 1 row 1/4" FF - dyed, 2 rows 3/8" FF.
Pack well, cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FF inside and outside, seagrass between rims and lash with 11/64" FO.
Attaching the "SP" Handle: Find the center spoke on each end of the basket. Using a small drill bit (we used a 3/32") create a hole in the spoke just below the rim. Repeat on the opposite end. Gently spread the wire and insert it into the hole from the outside of the basket to the inside. Do the same on the other end. Bend the wire up over the rim and back down to the outside. Wear safety glasses to cut off the excess wire.
Stain your basket and let it dry completely before gluing in the wooden toothpick holder.
All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
