Cut 20 spokes from 5/8" FF each 9" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center of the base (3") and insert a spoke at this mark and one on the opposite side. These are your handle spokes. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the ends of each spoke (you want a tight fit). Gluing in the spokes is optional. Insert the remaining spokes - 9 on each side of the handle spokes.
Twine with #2R 3 times around the base, keeping the spokes flat. End off the #2R. Gently upset the spokes and weave start and stop the following: 19 rows 3/16" FO, 1 row 1/2" FF, 1 row 3/16" Flat Oval, 1 row 7mm FF.
Check the diameter often - the top of the basket should be approximately 7 3/4". Pack well. Cut and tuck the spokes. Rim with 1/2" FO, seagrass between rims and lash with 3/16" FO.
ATTACHING THE HANDLE: Locate your handle spokes on each end of the basket and put a pencil mark on the rim. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handle with #4 screw, bead, wash & nut. Profile of handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket) --- screw, bead, handle, washer, rim & nut. Cut off the screw if it is too long and file the end if needed.
Paint or stain your basket and let dry completely. Thread the ribbon around the basket on top of the 1/2" FF weaver and make a bow.
OPTIONS FOR PAINTING YOUR BASKET: "Design Master" Colortool spray. A pigmented lacquer based spray. One light coat adds a translucency of color. 2-3 light coats provide complete coverage. Easy to use and quick drying. Or use a satin acrylic paint thinned with water and brushed on.
All materials (except paint) to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
