Cut 33 spokes from 3/8" FF 12" long. Put a light pencil mark at the center of the base (5"). Insert a poke on the rounded end of the base and on on the opposite end. These are your "handle spokes". It the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times and/or sand down the end of each spoke (you want a tight fit). Then insert 15 spokes on one side of the "handle spoke" and 16" on the other side. Having an odd number of spokes allows for continuous weave.

Twine with #2 R two times around, keeping the spokes flat. End off the round reed. Gently upset the spokes. Taper a long strand of 3/16" FO and continuous weave for 4 rows and end your weaver inside the basket. Start the 4mm Chocolate double twisted paper where you left off with the 3/16" FO. There is no need to wet the paper cord. I just laid the end on top of the 3/16" FO inside the basket. Continuous weave for 32 - 34 rows....save enough of the paper cord for your rim filler. If you need to add onto the paper cord just butt it inside and continue. Pack well as you weave. Start again with 3/16" FO and continuous weave 4 rows. Taper the weaver to end. Twine with #2 R two time around.

Pack again. Cut and tuck spokes (I tucked all my spokes). Rim with 1/2" FO, 4mm double twisted paper cord as the rim filler, and lash with 11/64" FO.

Attaching the Handle: The handle will be attached on the rounded ends of the basket. Locate your "handle spokes" on each end of the basket and put a pencil mark on the rim. Dampen the rim area before drilling the holes through the 1/2" FO. If the lasher is in the way, just move it slightly to one side. Attach the handle with #6 screw, bead, washer & nut. Profile of handle attachment (from outside to inside of basket)...screw, bead, handle, washer, rim & nut. Cut off the screw if it is too long and file the end if needed.

All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
